One Last Breath

One Last Breath is a poem written by Jeff. The poem was published in a collection of poems. It is a reflection of his love for surfing and the perils that the sport encompasses.

One Last Breath

The mighty master of the ocean releases his potent fury.
Perplexed by the sheer omnipotence of the approaching wave,
Then looking into the cold lifeless eyes of death,
And nonchalantly turning ever so rudely the opposite way.
Drops of pain, suffering, and vain plummeted from the sky,
And even the inclement storm did not hesitate to cease.
Seconds spanned a lifetime as patience was dimmed.
Waiting... waiting for my fate to peer into view.
The sudden rush flooded my brain and spread as if wildfire.
It approaches ripping rampantly about.
It crushes as if thunder and echoes sonorously in my mind.
The wave faintly whispers, but I can’t hear a thing,
Then realizing my fate, destiny steps forward to stare,
Into my cold emotionless eyes.
No breathing... no breaths... just silence...
Then one breath, one last breath, and
All at once engulfed by the rushing wild relentless waters,
Twisting turning all misconstrued in an impossible manner.
Then darkness... and sinking...
And watching the minuscule light fade... and fade away,
Deep into the depths of despair.
